At the start of a new year it is common practice to find the motivation to get to the gym or start a new project and have the ambition to become a better version of yourself than you were last year.
The reality is, that motivation is often fleeting; January is a long cold month after all and come January 1st, last year was only 24 hours ago - it is impossible to enact long term change overnight. It is far better to start the New year by looking back; what did you achieve last year? Did you make any steps towards your long term goals? How far along have you got on your career timeline?
Then ask yourself:
What do you want to achieve this year?
How can you achieve that?
These may be personal goals like being able to run a marathon or learn a new hobby, but it is also important to re-evaluate and assess your career to avoid becoming stuck in a stagnant position. After all we spend a large portion of our lives at work and a challenging and fulfilling work life will have a positive impact in other areas of your life.
How long should you stay in each role?
On average people change jobs every 3-5 years. This does come with a caveat, as it is dependent on your role and the seniority of your position. Generally speaking, more junior roles move more frequently, unless you are being supported by your firm through a qualification, where you may then stay longer. It is likely that you would continue in a more senior role for longer before moving on. We would encourage you to evaluate how long you have been in your current position and whether now is the right time to assess your options.
When evaluating your current work position be honest and challenge yourself on your thoughts and feelings:
What is missing from your current role? Challenge? Responsibility? Financial incentive? Colleague comradery?
Do you like your work environment?
Do you look forward to going to work?
Can you now progress to a more senior position?
Are you ready for more responsibility?
Would you like to achieve further qualifications in your field?
Would you like to change the field you're currently working in for a new challenge?
You will also need to consider what you are looking for. What will give you job satisfaction and give you the drive to push yourself? This could be the content of work and how challenging it is, but don't overlook other important factors like working environment, the team and office morale.
There are roles available at all levels in various fields. We can assist with every step of the process and take the stress out of the job search. From reviewing and updating your C.V. to putting you forward for suitable roles in a workplace befitting you. We will prep you for interviews and discuss feedback after.
In this leap year, let us help you leap forward in your career.
